8. Age Sex Distribution

According to published observations on age distribution in the perspective of world’s population, the developing countries such as the Philippines has a significantly younger population than the developed countries, resulting to a population pyramid characterized by a very broad base that gradually narrows at the top. Studies show that young structures in less developed countries are due mainly to higher levels of childbearing in the past years.

The table below shows that young dependents aged 0 to 14 comprise 32.51% of the household population and the old dependents (aged 65 years and above) is 4.80% of the household population. The remaining 62.68% of the population are the economically active or “working-age” population (15 to 64 years old). Overall dependency ratio for Tantangan is 60; which means that for every working age population, there are about 60 dependents (52 young dependents and 8 old dependents).

The overall sex ratio of Tantangan is 107, meaning that 107 males for every 100 females, and male population is higher with 23,604 against female with 22,140 counts. Male population account for 52% while the female population is 48% of the household population in 2020.

The resulting population pyramid of Tantangan, which graphically show the proportion of the population of a given age and sex with respect to the household population, reflects an expansive pyramid characterized by a broad base that tapers at the top. A pyramid generally reflects the pattern of fertility, mortality, and migration in the past, wherein a broad-based pyramid is a result of a very high fertility or population growth rate while a narrow-based pyramid indicates low fertility.

The age brackets Under 5 (0 – 4), 5 – 9, and 10 – 14 have the highest percentage accounting to 11.55%, 10.47%, and 10.21% respectively. The age bracket having the least percentage is 80 years and over accounting to 0.77%.

It could be noted that more than one half of the female population of Tantangan (51.68%) belongs to the reproductive age group or child bearing age of 15 to 49 years old recorded at 11,434. The female old dependents are 1,230 or 5.56% of the female population is higher than the male old dependents with 965 or 4.09% of the total male population. The young dependents have similar percentage at 32.84% and 32.15% of the total male and female population respectively.

It is also observed that starting the age bracket of 60-64, there is a significant shift of sex ratio where the female population outnumber the male population at a ratio of 95.25 and ending at 61.07 males for every 100 females at age 80 and over. This reveals that women tend to outlive men, which may be attributed to the lifestyle that most men lead and the pressure they take on as head of the family.
